's an odd new trend on the streets of oakland. when it comes to traffic stops, police there just don't make them like they used to. cbs 5 reporter joe vazquez explains why the numbers are down so much. >> reporter: as we drove the streets of oakland this afternoon the only police cars we saw were parked at the oakmont police substation. truth is site of a cop pulling over a car is more rare. the number of police stops in oakland is down some 75% from a few years ago. that's according to numbers obtained by the "chronicle" which shows oakland police made about 68,000 stops in 2008 and 2009. in 2010, the number went down to 49,000. in 2011, another huge drop to about 25,000. and by the end of this year, the projected number of police stops in oakland will be 15,733. police cite factors including layoffs which reduced the police force by 25%, cops running from one 911 call to another making it harder to make stops in between. also, special investigative and traffic teams have been disbanded including the motorcycle squads. >> just the motorcycle squads alone would be responsible for an average

people were shot to death in the 800 block of mead avenue in west oakland. then at about 2:30, one person was killed in a stabbing on walnut street in the seminary area of oakland. police are investigating the possibility that the killings are related. >>> the chp pulled a bmw over for speeding in oakland last night but when officers walked toward the car the driver took off. a minute later crashed into a lincoln continental at the 98th avenue on-ramp to i-580. someone in the back seat of the lincoln was killed. the bmw's driver was caught shortly after taking off. >>> a shooting now under investigation at an east bay bart station. the 18-year-old victim is expected to recover. he was shot in the parking lot at the pittsburg-bay point station just before 7:00 last night. at this time, they don't have any suspects. the shooting and investigation caused some major delays though for bart riders. >>> gunfire from police hit the suspect at an el cerrito gas station. it happened last night just after 6:30. police say they came across a man pistol whipping a woman at a chevron station at

story from oakland. a grandmother was shot and killed by a stray bullet. ktvu's tara moriarty is in oakland right now with the latest on who she was and how this happened. tara? >> reporter: well, the woman was simply walking to the store, the way she's probably done countless times before. but last night she didn't make it. and now police at headquarters are trying to figure out exactly who is responsible. this violence erupted around 7:00 last night on the 9100 block of international boulevard, when gunfire erupted across the street from the victim. she was a 49-year-old grandmother walking with a relative when she was struck and killed. police did not identify a woman. but a long time friend said she was ramona foreman who cared for her mother. now, police have made no arrests. they are still trying to figure out what instigated the gunfire that left at least ten shellcationss on the sidewalk -- shell casings on the sidewalk and then after that, more gunfire. one person was injured and drove himself to the hospital. he was transferred to highland hospital. his condition is

customers are without power off the 580 east in oakland and they say the power started as they crashed into a power pole right there. let's look at what we saw when we got closer to that crash. the driver of the nissan altima was going left when she crashed. she kept going yet crashed into another vehicle. she spun out, hit that power pole splashed it in half and knocked out power to 6,000 customers. that driver left the scene and police are looking for her this morning. pg&e will try to get power to a couple hundred customers in the next 30 minutes so it will be just a few dozen without power but those people will be without power until the late morning hours so it is going to be a very dark morning for many customers this morning at least 40 customers for the next five or six hours. lorraine blanco ktvu channel 2 morning news. >>> well heavy rain pounded the bay area. the storm caused flooding on freeways. there was a accident as -- an accident in the caldecott tunnel and many responded during the rain storm. >> with any type of collision on the roadway where there is water it is typ

are traveling out of sfo, oakland or san jose, we checked with all three, there are no delays you have to worry about and no cancellations. that's the good news. what may give you a headache today, are the lines. it's very busy here at terminal 2 at san francisco international airport. you can see all of the cars pulling up. we've seen a steady stream of passengers unloading checking into the terminal. it's especially inside the terminal. this is video of the security line in terminal 2 from about 45 minutes ago. there were hundreds of people waiting to pass through and the line snaked all the way out into the middle of the terminal. today is one of the busiest travel days of the holiday season for this airport with 120,000 people expected to pass through sfo today alone and some people we talked to were surprised to see it so crowded here on christmas eve. others said it made more sense for them to fly out today. >> i heard it was very busy, yeah. >> i picked the 24th because it was like $250 less than what was on saturday and what was on -- or sunday and tuesday. it was obviously, a good choi
